Contrary to common belief, Victorian is not a style in modern house design rather an era in history.  However, Victorian became a collective term to refer to the many architectural styles that were predominantly used in building custom houses during the reign of United Kingdom’s Queen Victoria (1837 to 1901).

The United States of America adapted the Folk and Gothic Revival styles, both of the Victorian era, in their houses during this time but gave it a version of their own.  Maximizing the abundance of lumber and architectural trims in their country, construction builders used wood with  their houses instead of the original stone or brick finish these styles have.  The many houses built in this manner in the USA during the mid-1880’s made it a popular image of a Victorian inspired house up to now.
